🛡️ Poster Conservation 101
We get a lot of specific questions about poster restoration. While we cannot answer every individual query, here is our #1 golden rule: Always try to conserve as much as possible first.
💡 Key Concept: Restoration is what you do only after conservation has failed.
To keep your collection safe, follow these essential ground rules:
- Environmental Stability: Light, humidity, and pests are the biggest enemies of your posters. Keep them in a controlled environment.
- The Acid Problem: Over time, paper becomes acidic (especially paper with a high wood pulp content).
- The Brittle Effect: Acidic paper becomes incredibly brittle, making it highly risky to handle.
- The Deacidification Cure: To fix this, conservators must introduce water, and sometimes alkaline bases, back into the paper fibers to neutralize the acid.
