Claude Autant-Lara

Claude Autant-Lara (1901–2000, France) was a French film director, screenwriter, and actor. He began his career as an assistant director in the 1920s and rose to prominence in the 1940s with films like *Douce* (1943) and *The Devil’s Envoys* (1942), known for his elegant adaptations of literary works and contributions to French cinema during and after World War II. Autant-Lara directed over 30 feature films, blending classical style with social commentary, and was a vocal critic of the French New Wave movement.
