Gaston Schoukens

Gaston Schoukens (1901-1961) was a pioneering Belgian film director and a leading figure in popular national cinema for nearly thirty years. He achieved major cinematic milestones by directing the first Belgian sound film, La Famille Klepkens (1930), and the country’s first optical sound feature, Le plus joli rêve (1931). Schoukens explored diverse genres but became widely famous for his comedies and lighthearted farces featuring the distinct Brussels accent, including the massive box-office hit C’était le bon temps (1936). Although his popular comedies drew criticism from contemporary reviewers for their simplistic style, his late-career comedic film Un soir de joie (1955) achieved immense public success by celebrating local resistance and Brussels folklore.
