Jean-Paul Le Chanois

Jean-Paul Le Chanois (1905–1983, France) was a French film director, screenwriter, and actor who began his career as an assistant director and actor in the 1930s before directing his first feature in 1947. He gained prominence for socially conscious films such as *School for Postmen* (1947) and *Les Misérables* (1958), often adapting literary works and addressing themes of justice and human dignity in post-World War II French cinema. A member of the French Resistance during the war, he used pseudonyms to evade Nazi persecution and continued to influence leftist-leaning filmmaking until the 1970s.
