Maurice Tourneur

Maurice Tourneur (1876–1961, France) was a French film director and screenwriter who began his career in the early silent era, directing over 80 films known for their atmospheric visuals, innovative lighting techniques, and influence on fantasy and horror genres. He gained prominence in Hollywood after moving to the United States in 1914, where he helmed productions for Metro Pictures, including acclaimed works like *The Pride of the Clan* (1917) and *The Blue Bird* (1918). Tourneur is regarded as a pioneer of cinematic artistry, bridging European impressionism with American studio filmmaking before returning to France in the 1930s.
