Rainer Werner Fassbinder

Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945–1982, Germany) was a prolific German filmmaker, actor, and playwright who directed over 40 feature films, television movies, and stage productions between 1969 and 1982. A central figure in the New German Cinema movement, his work often explored themes of social alienation, oppression, and post-war German identity through innovative, melodramatic styles influenced by Douglas Sirk and Jean-Luc Godard. Fassbinder’s films, including *The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant* (1972), *Ali: Fear Eats the Soul* (1974), and *The Marriage of Maria Braun* (1979), earned international acclaim and helped revitalize German cinema during the 1970s.
