Teinosuke Kinugasa

Teinosuke Kinugasa (1896–1982, Japan) was a Japanese film director, screenwriter, and former actor who transitioned from onnagata roles in kabuki theater to cinema in the 1910s. He gained international acclaim for his experimental silent film A Page of Madness (1926), one of the earliest avant-garde works in Japanese cinema, and later for his color period drama Gate of Hell (1953), which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Kinugasa’s career spanned over 30 directed films, blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with innovative techniques during the silent and early sound eras.
