The Story:

In the sweltering heart of 1560, Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro leads a grand expedition from the Andes into the treacherous Amazon basin, driven by whispers of the fabled golden city of El Dorado; thwarted by savage terrain and vanishing supplies, he dispatches a daring scouting party of 40 souls on makeshift rafts down the mighty river, placing noble Pedro de Ursúa (Ruy Guerra) at the helm and the fiery, ambitious Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski) as his volatile second-in-command.

As peril mounts with rafts ensnared in deadly eddies, ambushed by unseen indigenous warriors, and the expedition fracturing under hunger and fever, Ursúa calls for retreat—igniting Aguirre’s ruthless ambition; he sparks a bloody mutiny, slays his superior, and seizes command, crowning the pompous Fernando de Guzmán (Peter Berling) as a mock “Emperor of El Dorado” to cloak his treason, ruling the dwindling band with iron terror and executing dissenters while plotting a twisted new empire, even eyeing his own daughter Flores for a perverse dynasty.

Drift into madness aboard a raft turned floating tomb, overrun by chattering monkeys and echoing with the ghosts of the fallen, where only Aguirre endures, a delirious tyrant defying the jungle’s wrath, proclaiming himself the unyielding “Wrath of God” as the river bears him to oblivion in this hypnotic saga of hubris, savagery, and the devouring wild.
