The Story:

In the shadowed jungles along the Nicaragua-Honduras border, visionary director Werner Herzog unveils a harrowing tale of the Miskito Indians, once allies in revolution, now fleeing persecution by the Sandinista regime that razed their villages, scorched their lands, and slaughtered their kin, driving a desperate band of survivors—including orphaned boys as young as ten—into the arms of the Contra resistance.

At a remote training camp, these innocent children, fueled by raw vengeance, transform into little soldiers under the stern gaze of battle-hardened trainers, many former guards of the fallen Somoza tyranny; they drill relentlessly, hefting grenade launchers and firing live rounds with chilling proficiency, their pure minds molded for war as a sergeant chillingly reveals the twisted logic: the young are ideal, uncorrupted and easily shaped for the fray, while co-director Denis Reichle draws a poignant parallel to his own boyhood as a child soldier in the dying embers of World War II.

Framed by the haunting ballad of a young warrior’s traditional song, this stark documentary ballad echoes through time as a universal dirge for stolen innocence, a moral cry against the eternal horror of hurling children into the abyss of endless violence.
