The Story:

In 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, as Rouen falls to Prussian occupation, a diverse group of French travelers including the aristocratic Count and Countess of Bréville, the bourgeois M. Carré-Lamadon and his wife, shopkeepers M. and Mme. Loiseau, republican Cornudet, two nuns, and the patriotic prostitute Élisabeth Rousset (Micheline Presle) nicknamed Boule de Suif secures passes to flee by stagecoach toward Le Havre.

Stranded at an inn in Tôtes by the sadistic Prussian officer Mademoiselle Fifi (Louis Salou) who demands Élisabeth’s company and revokes their departure when she refuses out of fierce patriotism, the hypocritical elites manipulate her through guilt and false piety until she capitulates only to stab the officer dead in an act of resistance.

This post-liberation 1945 satire pulses with tension as the elites betray their savior by resuming their disdainful airs upon escape, leaving audiences to savor the sting of collaboration versus the quiet fire of true French defiance.
