The Story:
In the shadowy underbelly of 19th-century France, innocent fisherman Chéri-Bibi (Jean Richard) is wrongly convicted of patricide and shipped off to the hellish Devil’s Island penal colony, but en route, he ignites a daring mutiny aboard the prison vessel alongside his loyal comrade La Ficelle, seizing control amid stormy seas and desperate cries for freedom.
Rescuing a shipwrecked castaway—the debauched Marquis Maxime du Touchais, husband to the enchanting Cécily (Danielle Godet), the love of Chéri-Bibi’s life—the mutineers face tragedy when Maxime meets a fatal end; enter the sinister surgeon Kanak, who masterfully grafts the Marquis’s aristocratic features onto Chéri-Bibi, allowing him to impersonate his rival and return to Dieppe seeking vengeance on his betrayers and a stolen reunion with Cécily.
