The Story:

In the bustling heart of late 19th-century Munich, the eccentric Lautenschlag family swings between Bavarian tradition and French flair: stiff royal garden architect father Rolf Illig presides over their merry poverty, while high-spirited pianist mother Christine Kaufmann fills their home with artistic chaos, all viewed through the eyes of ambitious tomboy daughter Mathias (Anja Jaenicke), who dreams of conducting symphonies and penning novels alongside her quiet eldest sister Hespera (Lena Stolze), theatrical middle sister Gervaise, and stuttering brother Otto (Ulrich Tukur).

As financial woes mount and little tragedies—darning endless socks, scraping by on dreams—test their vibrant household, the family’s cultural clashes ignite both laughter and tension, with the titular swing in their garden mirroring their emotional ups and downs amid the gathering shadows of a changing world.

A lavish tapestry of daily joys and quiet heartaches, this breathless period drama captures the end of an era’s refined whimsy, hurtling toward the cataclysm of 1914, where Mathias emerges as a witty, melancholy loner, her voice finally found in the ink of her writings—dare to sway with the Lautenschlags before the winds of war still their song forever!
