The Story:
In the shattered ruins of post-WWII Berlin, young Edmund Koeler (Edmund Moeschke) roams the bombed-out streets of 1948, desperately scavenging for food and money to sustain his fractured family—his bedridden, ailing father, his bar-hopping sister Eva seeking cigarettes from Allied soldiers, and his brother Karl-Heinz, hidden away in fear of arrest for his Wehrmacht past.
Drawn into the web of Enne (Ernst Pittschau), a shadowy former Nazi schoolteacher clinging to twisted ideologies, Edmund absorbs the brutal creed that the weak must be sacrificed for the strong to endure; in a moment of heartbreaking desperation over his father’s suffering, the boy poisons his tea, unleashing a torrent of irreversible tragedy.
Plagued by gnawing guilt and forsaken by all—Enne recoils in cowardice, his siblings offer no comfort, and the harsh world of street urchins rejects him—Edmund confronts the moral void of a defeated nation, wandering into desolate shadows where innocence meets oblivion in a poignant cry against the ruins of humanity.
