The Story:

In the shadowed annals of medieval France, young Guillemette Babin (Héléna Bossis), born under the curse of her mother Radegonde (Germaine Kerjean) who was branded a witch and consigned to the flames, yearns for a life untainted by superstition; guided by a compassionate priest, she secures humble employment as a servant in the opulent household of Maître Pierre Pasquier (Édouard Delmont), hoping to forge a path of righteousness amid the era’s pervasive dread.

Yet fate weaves a web of heartbreak and temptation: Guillemette’s tender affections for the master’s son are cruelly rebuffed, while the lecherous patriarch himself ensnares her in unwanted pursuit; tragedy erupts as the despondent youth takes his own life, the mistress perishes in sorrow, and Guillemette, now wed to the aged master against her will, succumbs on their wedding night to the siren call of a forbidden Witches’ Sabbath, echoing the dark legacy she sought to escape.

As Prosecutor Salavert (Jean Davy) and a valiant young reporter clash against the tide of hysterical accusations, Guillemette faces the inexorable cycle of persecution in this haunting tableau of surreal sorcery and risqué revelry, a bold 1948 vision by director Guillaume Radot that grips the soul with its execrable inexorability.
