The Story:

In the sweltering jungles of Gabon, the noble Dr. Albert Schweitzer (Pierre Fresnay), a visionary theologian, musician, and physician from Alsace, forsakes the comforts of European acclaim to forge a beacon of hope at Lambaréné, erecting a humble field hospital to wage war against the ravages of malaria and leprosy that plague the indigenous souls.

Yet triumph is shadowed by adversity: colonial overseer Leblanc eyes the humanitarian with distrust amid Franco-German frictions, logistical nightmares test his unyielding resolve, but steadfast allies—devoted nurse Marie Winter and compassionate Father Charles—bolster his crusade, until the thunder of World War I erupts in 1914, branding Schweitzer an “enemy national” for his birthplace in the German Empire and culminating in his harrowing midnight arrest, wrenching him from his life’s mission.

As the clock strikes twelve in the heart of darkness, witness the poignant fall of the “Grand White Doctor,” his internment a testament to war’s cruel irony, only for a triumphant post-war return to illuminate the enduring power of compassion and reverence for life in this stirring tale of sacrifice and redemption.
