The Story:
In the shadowy underbelly of modern Paris, fanatical young journalist Francis Ferriter (Jean-Louis Barrault), a self-proclaimed soldier of Christ who sees the world as a den of iniquity, harbors a seething repressed desire for his neighbor Theresa, a woman of loose morals whose very existence offends his puritanical soul.
Consumed by jealousy masked as divine justice, Ferriter commits the ultimate sin: he murders Theresa and schemes to pin the crime on her lover, but shrewd Commissaire Lavan (Pierre Fresnay) suspects the truth and relentlessly pursues the tormented zealot, forcing him to confront his unraveling faith amid the city’s sordid bars and blasphemous nights.
As guilt gnaws at his sanity, Ferriter seeks absolution in confession only to spiral into madness and heresy, finally confessing his jealous motives before his inevitable arrest— a chilling proto-noir descent into the abyss where righteousness crumbles and personal freedom dawns in chains.
