The Story:

In the sleepy Norman village of Courteville, the bumbling but good-hearted Hippolyte Lemoine (Bourvil), a naive thirty-something with the mind of a child, is stunned to learn from his late uncle Célestin’s will that he stands to inherit the prized family inn—provided he earns his primary school certificate within a year, forcing the village simpleton to dust off his ABCs and return to the schoolroom under the watchful eye of schoolteacher Pichet and his clever daughter Madeleine (Brigitte Bardot), who becomes his devoted tutor.

As scheming relatives plot to sabotage his unlikely quest for knowledge and claim the inheritance for themselves, Hippolyte grapples with academic woes, budding romance with the spirited Madeleine, and the mayor’s gleeful exploitation of the publicity goldmine of France’s oldest schoolboy, turning the village into a whirlwind of comic mishaps and heartfelt determination.

Prepare for a featherweight farce brimming with laughter, light romance, and the charm of 1950s French countryside folly, where even the dimmest bulb can shine brightest in this debut sparkle from Brigitte Bardot.
