The Story:

In the bustling barracks of 1885 France, a ragtag squadron of soldiers led by the affable Captain Hurluret (Raimu) navigates the absurdities of military life with mischief and mirth; slackers Fricot (Jean Gabin) and Laplotte dodge duties amid endless punishments, while dimwitted recruit Vanderague (Fernandel) cheerfully echoes “Y’a du bon!” to every barked order, and escapists Croquebol and La Guillaumette plot daring wall-scaling adventures under the watchful eye of tyrannical Warrant Officer Flick.

Tension mounts as a surprise inspection looms from a high-ranking General, catching Hurluret’s chaotic crew off-guard with two men AWOL and beds needed for reservists; the Captain, ever the indulgent guardian who sips absinthe and covers for his men’s follies—even footing bills for their escapades or inking over logs—resorts to desperate measures, including letting sixteen soldiers get arrested to free up space, all while Flick’s petty bullying threatens to unravel the fragile order.

As the General’s tour uncovers a whirlwind of irregularities and the deserters return in the nick of time, old camaraderie prevails in a cascade of comedic chaos, with the indulgent visitor dismissing the mayhem with a wry “It’s of no importance,” delivering uproarious laughs and heartwarming camaraderie in this timeless tale of barracks high jinks and unlikely loyalties.
