The Story:

In the chaotic barracks of the 51st Chasseurs in 1885, a ragtag squadron of soldiers led by the benevolent Captain Hurluret (Raimu) navigates daily life with mischief and mayhem: slackers Fricot (Jean Gabin) and Laplotte dodge duties, escapists Croquebol and La Guillaumette scale the walls for freedom, and dimwitted Vanderague (Fernandel) cheerfully endures bullying with his signature “Y’a du bon!” while the tyrannical Warrant Officer Flick enforces petty discipline.

Tension mounts as a surprise inspection looms from a high-ranking General, forcing the easygoing Hurluret—often tipsy on absinthe and covering for his men’s antics—to scramble: he hides AWOL deserters, spills ink on logs, and even arranges arrests to free beds for reservists, all to evade Flick’s rigid oversight and impending doom.

Amid uproarious blunders and heartfelt camaraderie, witness a whirlwind of French military folly where chaos reigns supreme, only to be saved by an old friendship and the General’s indulgent refrain, “It’s of no importance”—a timeless comedy of errors that captures the irrepressible spirit of the barracks!
