The Story:
In the frozen ruins of Stalingrad during the final collapse of the 6th Army, German soldiers including the Pianist (Paul Crauchet), the SS Captain (Gilles Katz), the Astronomer (Alberto Cavalcanti), the Pastor’s Son (Frederic Muninger), and the Bitter Son write deeply personal letters home that expose their mounting despair.
These men confront personal ruin from frostbite destroying musical hands, guilt over killings in nightmares, the indifferent emptiness of the stars, shattered faith in a hellish landscape, and bitter betrayal by paternal propaganda as they realize they have been abandoned.
Through non-linear vignettes intercut with stark war footage spanning eras, the film builds to a somber close where Nazi censors seize the undeliverable letters, leaving only anonymous voices swallowed by defeat in this haunting anti-war character study.
