The Story:

In the Eternal City of Rome, during the Holy Year, provincial newlyweds Ivan (Leopoldo Trieste) and Wanda Cavalli (Brunella Bovo) embark on their honeymoon, with the strait-laced Ivan meticulously plotting a schedule to dazzle his influential uncle and secure a coveted audience with the Pope, all while Wanda harbors a secret passion for the dashing hero of her favorite fotoromanzo, The White Sheik.

Chaos erupts when dreamy Wanda slips away from their hotel to deliver a fan letter, only to be whisked off to a seaside shoot where she encounters the real-life Fernando Rivoli (Alberto Sordi), the cowardly, lecherous actor behind the romantic facade, leading to a humiliating seduction attempt and a narrow escape from his jealous wife; meanwhile, frantic Ivan scours the streets, fabricating excuses for his family and stumbling into a poignant meeting with the compassionate prostitute Cabiria (Giulietta Masina), as Wanda, shattered by disillusionment, attempts suicide in the Tiber and ends up in a mental hospital.

A satirical whirlwind of shattered illusions and frantic redemption, The White Sheik captures the bittersweet clash between fantasy and reality, culminating in a tearful reunion where Wanda declares her bewildered husband her true hero, veiling their marital mirage as they proceed to the Vatican in Federico Fellini’s sparkling 1952 directorial debut—a romantic comedy that skewers celebrity worship with irresistible charm and poignant insight.
