The Story:
In the bombed-out Italian quarter of London, where the Blitz has left the community’s cherished Catholic church in ruins, enterprising journalist Guido (Aroldo Tieri) hatches a madcap scheme to rebuild it by staging a spectacular opera benefit gala, enlisting the world’s finest voices including the legendary Beniamino Gigli and the divine Maria Caniglia (as themselves) to draw crowds and funds.
But to secure the stars’ participation and lavish production, Guido must borrow a fortune from a ruthless usurer who slyly demands Guido’s beautiful fiancée Dora (Gina Lollobrigida) as leverage, sparking a whirlwind of frantic negotiations, mistaken identities, and operatic intrigues involving baritone Gino Bechi (as Gino) and Tito Gobbi (as himself) in this fast-talking comedy of errors.
