The Story:
In the harsh winter of 1892, pioneer rancher Phil Evarts freezes to death in a blizzard, leaving his spirited daughter Celia Evarts (Ella Raines) and wise Uncle John Evarts (James Bell) to inherit the vast Hatchet Ranch in southern Utah, a prize eyed by greedy neighbors Harve Garrison, Russ Schultz, and Ray Cavanaugh who scheme to seize its rich grazing lands.
As rival ranchers encroach with impunity, Celia’s fiancé Sam Danfelser (Forrest Tucker) betrays her by secretly allying with the land-grabbers for personal gain, while loyal foreman Will Ballard (Rod Cameron), raised alongside Celia, protects the ranch at all costs, igniting a love triangle with his jealous fiancée Lottie Priest (Barbara Britton); tragedy strikes when Uncle John, favoring peace through deals, is murdered by hired gunmen, forcing Celia and Will into a desperate stand-alone fight.
