The Story:
In the untamed frontiers of 1818 Alabama, rugged Kentucky militiaman John Breen (John Wayne), fresh from the triumphs of the War of 1812, stumbles upon a vibrant community of Napoleonic French exiles granted land by Congress, where he instantly loses his heart to the enchanting Fleurette de Marchand, daughter of a proud general.
Determined to win her affections, Breen leaves the militia, only to discover Fleurette is betrothed to the suave but scheming Blake Randolph, whose union aims to safeguard the settlement—yet with loyal sidekick Willie Paine (Oliver Hardy), Breen uncovers Randolph’s nefarious alliance with scoundrel George Hayden to pilfer the exiles’ land by slyly shifting boundary markers, prompting Breen to disguise himself as a surveyor and dive into danger.
