The Story:
In the sweltering skies over China, just before America’s plunge into World War II, Captain Jim Gordon (John Wayne) commands the daring American Volunteer Group, the Flying Tigers, a squadron of mercenary pilots fiercely guarding the vital Burma Road from Japanese invaders, their P-40 Warhawks roaring into battle with unyielding resolve.
Trouble brews when hotshot ace Woody Jason (John Carroll), driven by greed for the $500 bounty per kill, joins the fray, his reckless solo stunts clashing with Gordon’s disciplined teamwork—abandoning wingmen to chase glory, his absence during a deadly raid costs the life of grounded veteran Blackie, forcing Gordon to boot the selfish flyer from the squadron amid mounting losses and a budding romance with nurse Brooke Elliott (Anna Lee).
As Pearl Harbor’s thunder shakes the world into total war, Woody seeks redemption on a suicide mission to obliterate a Japanese bridge and supply train—when their flaming plane hurtles toward doom, he heroically ejects Gordon to safety and plummets into eternity, destroying the target in a blaze of glory, leaving Gordon to welcome U.S. reinforcements with renewed fire in his heart for the fight ahead.
