The Story:
In the shadowy world of New York art galleries, theater critic John Earl (Edward Ashley) becomes entranced by a haunting portrait painted by the enigmatic artist James Harlan Corbin (Francis Lederer), a man shadowed by a dark past—acquitted yet scarred from accusations of murdering his fiancée and model Madeleine in Paris, now immortalizing her Madonna-like visage on every canvas and every unwitting muse.
When Corbin’s latest model, the sultry nightclub singer Helen North (Linda Stirling), is found drowned after a fateful evening with the artist, suspicions reignite; Helen’s determined sister Linda (Ann Rutherford) infiltrates as his next model alongside Earl, only to unravel in the throes of forbidden passion for the tormented genius, even as another suitor, the affluent Ella Randolph (Gail Patrick), meets a watery grave post-rejection, landing Corbin behind bars once more.
