The Story:
In the sultry Gulf Coast, fiery Sicilian seamstress Serafina Delle Rose (Anna Magnani) worships her truck-driving husband Rosario until tragedy strikes: he’s gunned down by police in a smuggling mishap, plunging her into three years of bitter seclusion and causing her to miscarry their child, while she imprisons her blooming daughter Rosa (Marisa Pavan) in the same veil of grief, fiercely thwarting Rosa’s romance with innocent sailor Jack Hunter by demanding a sacred oath of purity before the Virgin Mary.
But illusions shatter when gossiping neighbors, led by sharp-tongued Bessie (Jo Van Fleet), unveil Rosario’s secret betrayal—a torrid affair with the voluptuous Estelle, whose rose tattoo mirrors his own—shattering Serafina’s saintly vision of her lost love and hurling her into a storm of rage and despair.
