Margit Carstensen

Margit Carstensen (1940–Present, Germany) is a German actress celebrated for her roles in the New German Cinema movement, particularly in films directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. She rose to prominence with her lead performance as Petra von Kant in Fassbinder’s 1972 adaptation of the play, earning acclaim for her intense portrayals of complex, often neurotic female characters. Carstensen has also appeared in notable works like “Effi Briest” (1974), “The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum” (1975), and later international projects, establishing her as a versatile and enduring figure in European cinema.
