Pierre Blanchar
Pierre Blanchar (1892–1963, French Algeria/France) was a French stage and film actor who appeared in more than 80 films from 1920 to 1962. Renowned for his performances in adaptations of classic literature, such as the title role in Abel Gance’s 1934 film *La Révolte des vierges* and as Inspector Maigret in *Quai des Orfèvres* (1947), he was a leading figure in French theater and cinema during the interwar and postwar periods. Blanchar received the Légion d’honneur and was nominated for the Venice Film Festival’s Volpi Cup for his role in *Le Défroqué* (1954).
