The Story:

In the bustling streets of Paris, mild-mannered advertising clerk Jean Brévent (Bourvil) has spent five long years pining for his lost love, the elegant Catherine (Danielle Darrieux), who vanished without a trace after their wartime romance; one fateful bus ride changes everything when he spots her, follows her to a lavish apartment, and discovers she’s entangled with Robert Sartori (Roger Hanin), his former subordinate turned wealthy tycoon.

Desperate to reclaim her heart before she sails for Canada that very evening, Jean hatches a madcap scheme, impersonating the suave Director General of Publiparis in a borrowed Chevrolet Impala, swiping office keys for a grand divorce charade, and luring her to a posh country villa owned by his quirky landlady Juliette (Arletty), with bumbling aid from her trumpet-blasting son-in-law Patrick (Jean-Paul Belmondo)—but lurking beneath the farce is Jean’s tormented soul, a hidden gun, and whispers of tragic revenge if she spurns him once more.

From deceptive delights to dunked-in-the-pond absurdity, witness a whirlwind Sunday of laughter, longing, and redemption in this bittersweet French comedy-drama, where pride crumbles into passion and true love triumphs over tall tales—directed by Marc Allégret, a 1958 gem blending romance’s ache with farce’s frenzy!
