Ernst Matray

Ernst Matray (1887–1978, Hungary/United States) was a Hungarian-born film director, dancer, choreographer, and actor who worked primarily in German cinema during the silent era. He directed around a dozen films between 1913 and 1924, including “Das verlorene Paradies” (1917) and “Die stille Stadt” (1921), often collaborating with his wife, actress Tilla Durieux. After emigrating to the United States in the 1930s due to the rise of Nazism, he focused on choreography and teaching, influencing modern dance in Hollywood.
