The Story:

In the shattered ruins of post-WWII Berlin, 1948, young Edmund Koeler (Edmund Moeschke), a resilient 12-year-old boy, navigates the devastation to sustain his beleaguered family—his bedridden, chronically ill father, his bar-hopping sister Eva (Ingetraud Hinze) trading favors with Allied soldiers for cigarettes, and his brother Karl-Heinz, hidden away in fear of arrest for his Wehrmacht past.

Desperation leads Edmund into the sway of Enne (Ernst Pittschau), a shadowy former Nazi schoolteacher clinging to radical doctrines, who whispers that the weak must be sacrificed for the strong to endure; haunted by his father’s suffering, Edmund poisons the old man’s tea in a misguided act of mercy, unleashing a torrent of guilt when Enne recoils in horror and abandons him.

Adrift in a moral wasteland, rejected by siblings and the feral street children, Edmund confronts the abyss of his deeds in a bombed-out husk, toying fleetingly with scrap metal before leaping into oblivion—a poignant dirge for innocence lost in the rubble of war’s aftermath.
